Announcement of the candidates for the election of ICOH Officers and members of the Board for Triennium 2015-2017

The candidates must be eligible under Article 5, section 2 and 8 of the ICOH Constitution. The Officers and the members of the Board shall be elected as set forth in the Bye-Laws for the triennial period separating sessions of the General Assembly. They may be re-elected to the same office for no more than one additional term, with exception of the Secretary-General, who may be elected for more than one additional term. The newly elected Officers take office at the General Assembly convened immediately after the ICOH 2015 Congress.

A member of the ICOH can be a candidate for one post only at a time.

The names and curricula will be also published in the 2nd-3rd Newsletter 2014.

Out of these names, the Secretary-General will prepare the ballot form, with the names of the candidates for each office in random order.

The Secretariat will send the ballot papers and envelops by mail to all ICOH members in good-standing according to Bye-Law 6, section 3, at the beginning of the new year.

The ballot papers and envelops shall be returned and reach ICOH Secretariat no later than April 30, 2015 (Bye-Law 6, section 3).

Dr. Jukka TAKALA – FINLAND

Born 20 October 1946.
DSc (PhD) in Occupational Safety and Health, Adjunct Professor, Tampere University of Technology;
Senior Consultant to Ministry of Manpower, Singapore.

Prior to joining the WSH-Institute as the first Executive Director in 2011, he was the Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work located in Spain 2006-2011, and in charge of the Coordination of all EU regulatory agencies in 2010-11.

Held several positions in the ILO in Africa, Asia, and at ILO Headquarters as Director of the Global InFocus Programme on SafeWork, and responsible for ILO OSH Conventions, GHS process, Encyclopaedia, IOMC, Information Centre CIS, WHO Collaboration…until 2006. Has a global network of contacts after 40+ years experience in OSH.

Dr. Marilyn FINGERHUT - USA

Marilyn Fingerhut, Ph.D. is retired from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where she worked for 25 years. She also worked for NIOSH at the World Health Organization in Geneva. She continues to work as a consultant for NIOSH in the role of Coordinator of the NIOSH Global Collaborations Program. Dr. Fingerhut holds a Ph.D. in Cell Biology and a Masters Degree in Occupational Health. She is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed papers. The areas of interest in her epidemiologic research are global burden of disease, dioxin, carcinogens, and issues of women workers. She served as ICOH Vice President from 2006-2009, and has been an ICOH Board member from 2009 to 2015. She contributed to the leadership organizing several ICOH Congresses and assisted in the founding of the Scientific Committee on Women and the new Working Group on Occupational Safety and Health in Mining.

Dr. Seong-Kyu KANG – REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Curriculum Vitae

Seong-Kyu Kang is the Vice President for Technology of Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA). He was the Director General of Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI). He joined ICOH in 1992, and served as the Secretary of the Scientific Committee of Neurotoxicology and Psychophysiology. He is currently 2nd term of ICOH Board member and the Editor-in-Chief of ICOH Newsletter. He is responsible for 31st ICOH Seoul Congress (2015) at KOSHA.

Dr. Kang is an occupational and family physician, and holds a Ph.D. in Medical Science. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer at the US NIOSH. He is an experienced investigator of occupational diseases, who is interested in neurotoxicity, biological monitoring, occupational health service, the history of occupational health, injuries and policies. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed papers and established a new journal, Safety and Health at Work (SH@W) for international occupational health.

He has served as ICOH NS to Mexico 2000-2006, and ICOH Board Member 2006-2012. He was Chair of the ICOH-Congress 2012, Cancun-Mexico. He’s Medical Director of Procter&Gamble Company in Latin America, Occupational Health professor National University of Mexico, and University of Guadalajara. He’s Occupational Medicine specialist, Master Degree on Health Sciences, Master in Toxicology and PhD on Health Sciences. He received regional awards from Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, for academic scientific contributions on OM/OH. He received honorary membership by OH organizations in five Latin American countries. He presented papers, conferences and conducted courses in countries from Americas, European Union and Asia. He was President of many OH organizations in Mexico and Latin America. He’s President of the Mexican Board of certification on Occupational Medicine, and founder of the National Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health (Mexico).

Sergio IAVICOLI – Italy

Curriculum Vitae

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Rome "La Sapienza" cum laude. He got his PhD degree in Occupational Health and Industrial Toxicology. Research Fellow at University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health.

Currently he is Director of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Epidemiology and Hygiene of the Italian Workers’ Compensation Authority (INAIL), World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHO CC). Also he is ICOH Secretary General and President of the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology (EAOHP). He is Editorial Board of several scientific journals and Member of different national/international Committees including WHO Global Advisory Committee in Occupational Health. Scientific coordinator of over 40 national and international research programmes. Author of about 140 peer-review publications, of more than 250 abstract/contributions in conference proceedings and of more than 20 monographs in Occupational Health. Since 2014, national scientific qualification as full professor in SSD Med44/Occupational Medicine sector.

Over 20 years of experience in health promotion, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, occupational and environmental medicine, crisis management and safety.

Medical volunteer at the Health Promotion Center of USP (1999-2004). Professor in post-graduate courses: Health Promotion (since 2004) and Occupational Medicine (since 2009). Visiting professor at the National School of Public Health (2005) and UNIRIO (2009) – Rio de Janeiro. Since 2014, she teaches occupational health on MBA course of Quality of Life (ABRAMGE).

Andrew CURRAN – UNITED KINGDOM

Professor Andrew Curran is Deputy Chief Executive of the UK’s national Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). He has responsibility for the leadership of 350 scientists, engineers and physicians who work at HSL, and also for the delivery of HSL’s science strategy. Andrew has played an active role in WHO (HLS being a Collaborating Centre), and has been a Board Member of ICOH. He has been a member of organizing committees for a range of national and international conferences including EPICOH (2011) and ISBM (2013), and he Chairs the Scientific Steering Group of PEROSH. Andrew has published over 70 peer-reviewed publications in his field, and has delivered keynote papers at International conferences. If re-elected to the ICOH Board, Andrew would continue to bring his long standing outstanding of the issues faced when delivering occupational health improvements which required collaboration across the interfaces between scientists, regulators, policy makers and industry.

Yucel DEMIRAL – TURKEY

He is working in Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty, Public Health Department and Center for Occupational Health. His research and interests have covered wide range of occupational health field including psychosocial work environment; health inequalities; health care workers; cardiovascular diseases, organization of occupational health services and occupational hygiene. He has been involved number of EU funded projects as a researcher and coordinator. Dr Demiral is serving as the editor in chief in Turkish Journal of Public Health. He is a sincere promoter of ICOH activities in national and international level. He has served as the national Secretary for Turkey between for two terms. He translated ICOH ethic codes into Turkish. On the basis of his networks in Turkey and in the region, he would be in a good position to translate results of OH&S research into practice, especially in the south-east European region, but also worldwide.

Past-President of the Federation of Occupational Health in Mexico 2009-2011; FeNaSTAC is the most important professional association of Occupational health professionals in Mexico with 20 societies and 3000 members. Past President of the Latin American Association of Occupational Health; Editor in chief of the OH scientific Magazine REMESAT in Mexico.
Regarding my activities in ICOH, I was Scientific Co-chair of the ICOH Congress 2012 Cancun; Mexico National Secretary of ICOH in 2006-2011. I am board member of ICOH 2012-2014 and chair of the Finance Committee of ICOH.

Monique H. W. Frings-Dresen is Full Professor in ‘Occupational Health and Diseases’ at the Coronel Institute of Occupational Health, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam. She was Director of AmCOGG (Amsterdam Center for Health and Health Care Research).

Before she worked as researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Amsterdam (Department of Physiology), as Assistant Professor at “Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire de Grenoble, consultations de medicine du sport” at Grenoble, France. Now she is Principal Investigator of the line of research ‘Development and Prevention of Occupational Disease’ and Director of the Coronel Institute of Occupational Health (which contains the Netherlands Center for Occupational Diseases, the Research Center for Insurance Medicine, the People and Work Outpatient Clinic and the Expertise Center of Pre-employment Medical Examinations and Workers’ Health Surveillance).

She is an expert on the topic of prevention of occupational diseases, member of different ICOH Scientific Committees and ICOH Board Member.

Mats Hagberg, M.D., Ph.D., is chief physician and director of Dept of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and professor/chairman Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Gothenburg (UGOT) Sweden. He is currently chairman ICOH scientific committee vibration & noise and assisted in the founding of the Scientific Committees musculoskeletal disorders and Occupational Health for Health Care Workers. He has also served as a secretary in the Scientific Committee Occupational Health for Health Care Workers. Dr. Hagberg is the author of more than 170 peer review papers, among those a position paper (2012) from the Musculoskeletal Scientific Committee. He has received the Taylor award. He started the successful series of PREMUS conferences together with late Åsa Kilbom in 1991. He has been visiting researcher in UCLA, USA and University of Bologna, Italy. The areas of interest is musculoskeletal disorders, vibration and sustainable health in ageing workers.

I, as Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland led the successful bid to host ICOH 2018 in Dublin. I am President of the Local Organising Committee for ICOH 2018.

Seichi Horie, MD, MPH, PhD, is Professor, Health Policy and Management, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan (UOEH). He received MD in 1986 and PhD in 2002 from UOEH; MPH in 1993 from University of California, Berkeley. He is board certified by Japan Society for Occupational Health (JSOH) and Japanese Society of Internal Medicine. He joined ICOH in 1996, has worked as National Secretary since 2009, and engaged in the upcoming revision of ICOH International Code of Ethics. He is currently a member of Occupational Health Committee in Japan Medical Association and an Associate Member of Science Council of Japan. He completed occupational medicine residency at University of California, San Francisco, worked as a full-time occupational physician of a steel works in Tokyo Metropolitan Area. Since 2001, he has been promoting education and research with special interests for prevention of heatstroke, noise-induced hearing loss, and circulatory diseases from overwork.

Eun-A Kim is MD (Occupational Medicine), MPH, Ph.D. She began research on occupational health since 1995, has been Director of Department of Occupational Diseases Research, Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA), South Korea since 2009. Dr Kim has been good standing member of ICOH since 2005, and served as secretary of scientific committee of Neurotoxicology and Physhophysiology (SCNP) of ICOH since 2010. She contributed several international symposiums for SCNP and transferred the achievements on of ICOH to the projects of ILO and WHO such as diagnostic tools for occupational disease. As director of occupational research department of KOSHA, she conducted several epidemiological studies on occupational neurotoxicology, manganese toxicity, occupational cancer, and related occupational health program for the practice in workplace. She is member of editor for international journals such as Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Safety and Health at Work.

Christophe PARIS – FRANCE

Christophe Paris, 55, MD (occupational medicine), PhD (Epidemiology) is head of the Occupational Diseases Department of the University Hospital of Nancy, France. He is also Director of the Unit Research EA7298 INGRES (Lorraine University) since 2013. His clinical activity is spotlighted on occupational respiratory diseases, particularly lung cancer, asbestos related diseases and occupational asthma. He is involved in several French large projects, as an epidemiologist. He participated since 2011 to the EU-COST program “Monitoring trends in Occupational Diseases and tracing new and Emerging Risks in a NETwork” (MODERNET). Louwna was elected as SCOHN vice chair in 2006 and chairperson for the term 2009 – 2015. Kari REIJULA – FINLAND

Kari Reijula, MD, PhD, Professor acts as the theme director of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Helsinki, and professor in occupational health at the Medical Faculty, Helsinki University. He achieved the Licenciate of Medicine (M.D.) degree in 1983 and Dr of Medicine (PhD) in 1985. He is specialist in occupational health, senior lecturer (docent) in occupational medicine and occupational health. He has acted as the professor of occupational health at the Tampere University and in Helsinki University, and a visiting professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA.

Prof Reijula has worked at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health since 1986. He was the director of regional institute in Helsinki in 2000-05, and the director of the Indoor Environment Quality - theme (since 2006).

Prof. Reijula has acted as the secretary of the ICOH WG on Occupational Infectious Agents (OIA).

Professor Sim is an Occupational Physician and Director of the Monash University Centre for Occupational & Environmental Health in Australia.  He has had experience as a practitioner and government before moving into occupational health research and teaching 25 years ago.  His main interests are the prevention of cancer, respiratory disease and other chronic diseases in workplaces.  He has published over 170 papers and book chapters.  He is the Editor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and has been an Associate Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health.  He is a current Board Member of ICOH, is Chair of the ICOH Scientific Committee on Occupational Medicine and has been a member of the ICOH Scientific Committee on Occupational Epidemiology Management Group for many years.  Other interests include building occupational health capacity and he has been involved in many international collaborations, including occupational disease surveillance projects in Thailand and China.

Dr. Jukka Vuori is Research Professor at the Centre of Development of Work and Organizations of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. His main interests are sources and consequences of occupational stressors, coping and prevention during the work life course, especially at work life transition phases. His research group has been involved in prevention research in the field of behavioural sciences, large randomly assigned field experiments and country-wide implementation and dissemination of group interventions into governmental and communal service systems, and private work organizations. Dr. Vuori has published extensively scientific works and served in many scientific expert duties for the EU, WHO and the Finnish government. He has served two trienniums as the chair of the ICOH Scientific Committee “Unemployment, Job Insecurity and Health”.
