Malcolm Harrington
Vice-President ICOH

ICOH & IOHA

Discussions between ICOH and IOHA (International Occupational Hygiene Association) have been taking place over the past 2 years but concrete proposals for collaboration are now moving forward with some speed.

A memorandum of understanding was signed during the latter part of President Caillard's term of office but more detailed discussions have taken place earlier this year between Vice-President Harrington and the immediate past President of IOHA, Dr Paul Oldershaw.

Specific areas being pursued are:

· Involvement of IOHA in the ICOH's stance on Child Labour with the ILO

· An IOHA observer to attend the Rome 2002 meeting - probably Linnea Lillienberg who not only has been an IOHA President but also an ICOH Board Members

· The ICOH with assistance from BOHS sponsored the session on Shift Work at the IOHA Bergen Conference in June 2002. This would be undertaken through the ICOH Scientific Committee on Shift Work.

· The design and management of a technical session at the Brazil 2003 Congress on Silicosis. This is planned as a joint ILO/WHO/ICOH/IOHA collaboration

· The IOHA's involvement in Health & Safety issues in Southern Africa to be linked to Work Life South and with the involvement of several ICOH Scientific Committees including industrial hygiene, occupational health in developing countries as well as Education & Training.
