Announcement of the candidates for the election of ICOH Officers and members of the Board for Triennium 2012-2014

The candidates must be eligible under Article 5, section 2 and 8 of the ICOH Constitution. The Officers and the members of the Board shall be elected as set forth in the Bye-Laws for the triennial period separating sessions of the General Assembly. They may be re-elected to the same office for no more than one additional term, with exception of the Secretary-General, who may be elected for more than one additional term. The newly elected Officers take office at the General Assembly convened immediately after the ICOH 2012 Congress.

A member of the ICOH can be a candidate for one post only at a time. The names and curricula will be also published in the 2nd Newsletter 2011. Out of these names, the Secretary-General will prepare the ballot form, with the names of the candidates for each office in random order.
The Secretariat will send the ballot papers and envelops by mail to all ICOH members in good-standing according to Bye-Law 6, section 3 starting from mid October 2011. The ballot papers and envelops shall be returned and reach ICOH Secretariat no later than February 18, 2012 (Bye-Law 6, section 3).

Kazutaka KOGI - Japan

Curriculum Vitae

Born on 26 February 1933 in Tokyo, Japan Doctor of Medical Science Kazutaka Kogi, Research Adviser of the Institute for Science of Labour in Japan, has been active in ICOH activities since 1969. He served as Chair of the Scientific Committee on Shiftwork, Board Member and Vice-President and was elected as President for Triennium 2009-2011. Dr. Kogi has wide experience in occupational health internationally from his service at the International Labour Office and from various international technical cooperation activities. He worked in the ILO as Regional Adviser for Asia-Pacific Region and as Chief of the Occupational Safety and Health Branch and Director of the Working Conditions and Environment Department in Geneva. He has made an international impact through his research, training and interventions for improvement of occupational health for the underserved groups in developing countries, small-scale enterprises, agriculture and the informal sector. His intervention methods are authorized by the ILO for worldwide use and applied widely in practice on all continents.

Suvi Anneli LEHTINEN – Finland

Education MSc (Economics and personnel administration), 1975 Suvi Lehtinen works in the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health since 1975, in personnel administration, in international affairs, in information, and now as Chief of International Affairs. She has edited and co-edited some 45 proceedings in occupational health and safety (OH&S), co-authored some 25 research articles, and published some 200 popularized articles. At national level, she has participated in the work of several governmental work groups and committees, and in several WHO, ILO, FINNIDA and EU Expert Meetings and Networks as Member or Rapporteur in 1988–2008, and continues. She has established three regional newsletters on OH&S: African Newsletter, Asian-Pacific Newsletter and Barents Newsletter, and works as Editor-in-Chief in them. She chaired ICOH SC on Occupational Health and Development June 2006–2009 and served as a Board member 2003–2009, and as Vice-President in 2009–2011.

Bonnie ROGERS – USA

Bonnie Rogers, candidate for re-election as ICOH Vice President, is Professor and Director, University of North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center, USA. She completed her doctorate at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in occupational and environmental health sciences (OEH), and studied ethics at the Hastings Center in New York. Dr. Rogers is past president of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, and Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics. She has published two books, nearly 200 OEH articles, and conducted numerous funded investigations on health care worker hazards, ergonomics, OH ethical issues, and OHN practice and education. Dr. Rogers is a very active member of ICOH as current VP 2009-2012 and Co-Chair ICOH 2012 Congress Scientific Committee; Chair, Scientific Committee on Education and Training 2003-2009, and previously Secretary. She is a member of the SCs on Occupational Health Nursing and OH for Health Care Workers.

Dr. Abeytunga, who has been with CCOHS since the inception of its operations in 1980, initiated and directs the development and implementation of CCOHS' wide spectrum of services providing instant access to current knowledge education and tools to support the essential health and safety initiatives and activities in the workplace. These services rely heavily on the innovative application of new information technologies. He is an experienced strategic planner and senior executive with a proven track record in the conceptualization, development and effective implementation of many occupational health and safety related programs and projects of international repute, and is a recognized speaker in global, regional and national gatherings on a range of topics in this field.

Giovanni COSTA – Italy

Born in Genova (Italy) on August 11, 1947; graduated in Medicine in 1972, specialized in Occupational Medicine in 1975. He is currently Full Professor of Occupational Medicine at the University of Milano, and Director of the Unit of "Occupational Medicine 2" in the Department of Occupational Health "Clinica del Lavoro L. Devoto" of the IRCCS "Ca' Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico" Foundation in Milano.From 2004 to 2010 he has been Chairman of the ICOH SC on "Shiftwork and Working Time" and President of the Working Time Society (WTS). Member of the ICOH SCs on "Ageing and work" and "Occupational health for health care Workers". He is currently member of ICOH Board for the triennium 2009-2011 and of the Board Working Committee on Ethics and Transparency. His scientific research deals mainly with Work Physiology, Chronobiology, Shift Work and Working Hours, Ergonomics, Stress, Ageing at work, Work Disabilities. He is author of more than 400 scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals, books and proceedings of international and national congresses.

Andrew CURRAN – United Kingdom

Dr. Andrew Curran is the Director of Science and Resources at the UK's national Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). In this role he has responsibility for the leadership of the 350 scientists, engineers and physicians who work at HSL, and also for the development of the Laboratory's science strategy. Andrew has played an active role in WHO (HSL being a Collaborating Centre in occupational Health), and is a member of the organising committee for the 2011 EPICOH Conference in Oxford. He Chairs a European PEROSH Group on Wellbeing, as is co-Chair of the organising committee for the Wellbeing at work conference in Manchester in 2012. Andrew has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers in the field of occupational health, and delivered keynote papers at International conferences. He is an Honorary Reader at Sheffield University, is an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (UK).

Yucel DEMIRAL - Turkey

Elia ENRIQUEZ – Mexico

I have served as a Secretary of ICOH in Mexico 2006-2011 promoting the ICOH membership and working with the organization of the ICOH Congress 2012 since 2002. I am participating as a Scientific Co-Chair and a Secretary of the ICOH Congress. I have been the leader of the National Federation of Occupational Health as a President 2009-2011; in previous years I have held many positions in the organization which is the most important OH professional association in Mexico. I am the former President of Latin American Association of Occupational Health. I am currently the chief editor of the scientific magazine of O.H in Mexico I have experience as a coordinator and organizer of scientific meetings, raising funds and acquiring support, with contacts in the public sector. I am specialist with residency training with 27 years of clinical experience in occupational medicine, in teaching at the University and a board member of the National Board of Occupational Medicine.

Marylin FINGERHUT – USA

Marilyn Fingerhut, Ph.D. is retired from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where she worked for 25 years. She also worked for NIOSH at the World Health Organization in Geneva. She continues to work as a consultant for NIOSH in the role of Coordinator of the NIOSH Global Collaborations Program. She also is Co-Coordinator of the WHO Global Network of 75 Collaborating Centers in Occupational Health. Dr. Fingerhut holds a Ph.D. in Cell Biology and a Masters Degree in Occupational Health. She is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed papers. The areas of interest in her epidemiologic research are global burden of disease, dioxin, carcinogens, and issues of women workers. She served as ICOH Vice President from 2006-2009 and on the ICOH Board from 2009-2012.

Monique FRINGS-DRESEN – The Netherlands

Frings-Dresen (birth date: March 4th, 1952) is Full Professor in 'Occupational Health and Diseases' at the Coronel Institute of Occupational Health, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Seong-Kyu KANG – Republic of Korea

Seong-Kyu Kang is Director General of Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI), Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA). He is currently the ICOH Board member and the Editor-in-Chief of the ICOH Newsletter. He has been active in ICOH activities since 1992 and served as Secretary of the Scientific Committee of Neurotoxicology and Psychophysiology. He is also responsible for the 31st ICOH Congress to be held in Seoul in 2015. Dr. Kang is an occupational and family physician, and holds a Ph.D. in Medical Science. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer at the NIOSH, USA. He has been involved in many epidemiologic investigations for occupational diseases and is interested in occupational neurotoxicity, biological monitoring, occupational health service and the history of occupational health. He has published and edited many papers in peer review journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Safety and Health at Work (SH@W).

He has been involved in ICOH activities since he became an active member in 1993. He serves as the ICOH National secretary Japan for 2002-2008, and the Chair of Scientific Committee of Work Organization and Psychosocial Factors at Work for 2006-2012. He published more than 150 scientific papers in international journals on job stress, workplace stress management, and other topics in occupational health. He was a former Editor-in-chief, Journal of Occupational Health. He has been very active in international collaboration in occupational health and mental health epidemiology.

Timo LEINO – Finland

Timo Leino, Adjunct Professor and ICOH Board Member, is an Occupational Physician and a Senior Lecturer in occupational health at the University of Helsinki. He has worked in the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) in the years 1991-2010 and is currently a Chief Medical Officer at the Pension-Fennia. He has previously worked in the ILO and has been active in many WHO, EU and Baltic Sea region projects and national consultations. He has managed the development and expansion of occupational health services activity area of the WHO Collaborating Centres. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers and is an author or contributor in several text books and guides in his field of expertise. His main research and teaching interests are quality and effectiveness of occupational health systems, good occupational health practice, BOHS, health promotion, and ICT-based education.

Claudina NOGUEIRA – South Africa

Claudina Nogueira has BSc, BSc (Hons) and MSc (Medical Biochemistry) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has worked at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) since March 1990. Since July 2003, she has managed the Section of Communication and International Liaison at the NIOH. Claudina is the Global Manager of GPA Objective 1: Devise and implement policy instruments on workers' health of the current Global Network Plan (2009-2012) of the WHO Collaborating Centres (CC) in Occupational Health (OH); she was the scientific programme coordinator of the ICOH2009 Congress held in Cape Town; is a member of the ICOH Working Group on Occupational Infectious Agents, and a co-opted ExCo member of the South African Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM).

Kari Reijula, MD, PhD, Professor acts as the theme director of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Helsinki, and professor in occupational health at the Medical Faculty, Helsinki University. He achieved the Licenciate of Medicine (M.D.) degree in 1983 and Dr of Medicine (PhD) in 1985. He is specialist in occupational health, senior lecturer (docent) in occupational medicine and occupational health. He has acted as the professor of occupational health at the Tampere University and in Helsinki University, and a visiting professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA. Prof Reijula has worked at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health since 1986. Mary Ross is an occupational health specialist and honorary professor with appointments on editorial advisory committees for local and international occupational, public health and travel medicine journals. She was Co-Scientific Chair for the ICOH2009 congress, and is currently an ICOH Board member and Chair of the Working Group on Occupational Infectious Agents. She served as Director of the National Institute for Occupational Health (2004 to 2007), serving on the advisory committee for the WHO global network of collaborating centres in occupational health. Professor Sim is an occupational physician and Director of the Monash University Centre for Occupational & Environmental Health in Australia. He had experience as a practitioner before moving into occupational health research and teaching 20 years ago. His main interests are the prevention of cancer, respiratory disease and other chronic diseases in workplaces and he has published over 130 papers. He is Deputy Editor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Associate Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health. Peter Westerholm is Professor emeritus (Occupational Epidemiology) at Uppsala University, Sweden since April 2007. Ignatius YU – P.R. of China

Born in Hong Kong in 1954. Medical Doctor, Specialist in Occupational Medicine. Ignatius Yu is Professor and Head, Division of Occupational and Environmental Health and Associate Director (Research) of the School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also Visiting Professor to the School of Public Health of Sun Yat-sen University and Fudan University in China, and Consultant in Occupational Medicine for all Hong Kong public hospitals under the Hospital Authority. He has been a member of ICOH for around 20 years, and active in a number of scientific committees, including Epidemiology in Occupational Health and Respiratory Disorders. His major research interest is in occupational and environmental epidemiology, especially occupational and environment causes of lung cancer and respiratory diseases, as well as evaluation of occupational health interventions. He serves in the editorial boards of a number of occupational health journals and is an Executive Editor of the Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health.
