Pia Markkanen (Sc.D) is a Research Professor in the Department of Public Health,
Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell. She has 24
years of professional occupational safety and health (OSH) experience -- both
internationally at the United Nations’ International Labour Organization as well as OSH
research and teaching experience in the United States. Currently, Dr. Markkanen is
a co-investigator on the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH)-funded Safe Home Care Cleaning & Disinfection Project which aims at developing
scientific evidence on cleaning and disinfection products and practices that are effective for
infection prevention and safe for the respiratory health of workers. She was a co-
investigator for the NIOSH-funded Safe Home Care Project assessing a broad
range of working conditions in home care, and for the Project SHARRP evaluating sharps
injuries and other blood exposures among home healthcare providers.
