1981 - Cairo

25/09 - 01/10/1981

20th International Congress of the Permanent Commission and International Association on Occupational Health (PCIAOH)

For the first time the triennial Congress is held in Africa at Cairo, with the patronage of the Egyptian President Sadat and is entitled “Work for Peace and Health”.
The scientific programme covers 19 sections with 36 different sessions for a total of 364 contributions. Also “poster sessions” are encluded with 188 “poster presentations”.

Structure of ICOH

During the Cairo Congress ICOH Bye-Laws are not changed, but the recent Constitution changes had arisen a debate in the previous triennium, within the Commission, on the possibility of transforming ICOH from Association to Federation of societies dealing with occupational health. The Board, and in general Commission members, are against this proposal mainly owing to:
- different number of occupational health societies in the different countries: some do not even have one society and very very few members at the permanent commission;
- difficulty to organize scientific circulation tools in a federation with two official languages;
- need for more financial and human resources.
